Privacy Policy

Last updated: September 2026

This Privacy Policy explains, in full, what information "I'm a Student" (the "app") collects, how and why it's used, who can see it, and the choices you have. It applies to both the student-facing app and the administrator app used to operate it. By creating an account, you agree to this policy.

On this page

1. Information we collect

In short: your name, email, class/group/district, your study session history, and a device ID used only to stop people from making too many accounts. We do not collect payment information, and we do not access your contacts, photos, or files.

2. How we use this information

In short: to run the app's core features, calculate your stats, keep the leaderboard fair, and prevent abuse.

We do not use your information for advertising, and we do not sell it to anyone.

3. The leaderboard and what other students can see

In short: your nickname and study time may be visible to other students on the weekly leaderboard. Your real name, email, and district are not shown to other students.

The app includes a weekly leaderboard ranking students by total study time. If you appear on the leaderboard, other students using the app may see your nickname and your total study time for that week. Your real name, email address, exact location, and other profile details are not shown to other students through the leaderboard or anywhere else in the app.

4. Background timer and device permissions

In short: when you start a study timer, the app keeps running in the background (with a visible notification) so your time is tracked accurately even if you lock your phone or switch apps. It does not record audio, video, or your location.

To keep a study session running accurately while your phone is locked or you're using another app, the app uses an Android foreground service. While a session is active, a persistent notification is shown stating the elapsed time, and you can stop the session directly from that notification. This requires the following device permissions, all used solely for this purpose:

The background service does not access your microphone, camera, location, contacts, or any other app on your device.

5. Anti-cheat and device checks

In short: we briefly compare your phone's clock to the real time when you start and stop a timer, so changing your phone's clock can't fake extra study time. This doesn't reveal your location.

To keep the leaderboard fair, the app briefly compares your device's clock against the server's clock when a study session starts and ends. If your device's clock is significantly incorrect, your session may be flagged or its duration recalculated using the correct time. This check only compares clock time — it does not determine or store your physical location.

6. Device identifier and account limits

In short: we read your device's Android ID only to enforce a 4-account-per-device limit and stop leaderboard abuse. It is not used to track you across other apps or the web.

When you create an account, the app reads your device's Android ID (a identifier provided by the Android operating system) and records it alongside your new account. This is used exclusively to enforce a maximum of four accounts per device. If a device has already reached this limit, further sign-ups from that device are blocked. This identifier is not combined with advertising networks, not used to track your activity outside this app, and not shared with any third party.

7. Data storage and security

In short: your data lives on Google Firebase and travels over an encrypted connection. Access is restricted by security rules so students can only see their own data.

Your data is stored using Google Firebase (Cloud Firestore for data storage, Firebase Authentication for sign-in) and transmitted using encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS). Server-side security rules are in place so that, other than app administrators, a student can only read or modify their own account data — never another student's.

While studying data is cached temporarily on your device to support offline use (see Section 12 of the User Agreement regarding offline functionality), this cached copy is used only to sync your own activity once you're back online and is not accessible to other apps on your device.

8. Third-party and government websites

In short: the Results section opens official board, Teletalk, and admission websites inside the app using an in-app browser. We don't run those sites and this policy doesn't cover them — always be careful what you enter there.

The app's Results section provides quick access to official third-party and government websites — including education board result servers, the Teletalk result server, and the XI admission portal — displayed inside the app using an in-app browser (WebView), labeled "© Student App," so you don't have to leave the app or open a separate browser.

We do not own, operate, or control these external websites, and this Privacy Policy does not apply to them. Any information you enter on those sites (for example, your roll number or registration details to check a result) is subject to that website's own privacy practices, not ours. We recommend reviewing the privacy policy of any government or third-party website before entering personal information there.

The specific links and destinations shown in the Results section are configured by the app administrator and may change over time as official websites are added, updated, or retired. If a page fails to load, the app will let you know rather than silently failing.

9. SMS results

In short: the SMS result feature only prepares a message for you to send yourself — the app itself does not send any SMS or see your phone number.

The SMS section of the Results tab helps you compose the correct message text (based on your selected board, roll number, and year) to send to the official SMS short codes (16140 or 16222) for checking your result by text message. The app itself does not send this SMS on your behalf, does not access your phone's messaging app or contacts, and does not see or store your phone number.

10. Administrator access

In short: app administrators, using a separate admin app, can see student accounts and study activity to run the service, and can suspend, ban, or delete accounts that break the rules, or take the app offline for maintenance.

App administrators access the system through a separate, password-protected administrator application. Through it, administrators can:

See the User Agreement for the full scope of administrator authority, including suspension and account deletion.

11. Data retention

In short: we keep your data as long as your account exists. Deleting your account permanently erases it.

Your account and study session data are retained for as long as your account remains active. If you delete your account (see Section 12), your profile and all associated study session records are permanently removed from our systems and cannot be recovered. If your account is deleted by an administrator under the User Agreement, the same permanent removal applies.

12. Your choices and rights

In short: you can update parts of your profile in the app, switch between light and dark themes, and permanently delete your account and all your data whenever you want.

13. Children's privacy

This app is intended for use by secondary and higher-secondary (SSC/HSC-level) students, who may be minors. We collect only the information described in Section 1, which is limited to what is needed for the app's core study-tracking and results features, and we do not knowingly collect sensitive personal information beyond this. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with information you did not consent to, please contact us using the details in Section 15 so we can review and remove it.

14. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time, for example to reflect new features or legal requirements. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will reflect the most recent revision. Continued use of the app after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.

Sample entries: to keep the leaderboard lively when few students are online, the app also shows sample entries with made-up nicknames and study times. They are not real people or real accounts, are generated inside the app, and use no student's data.

15. Contact

If you have questions about this Privacy Policy or how your information is handled, please contact the app administrator through the app.
